(한국어)

Korean (South Korean: 한국어/韓國語 hangugeo; North Korean: 조선말/朝鮮말 chosŏnmal) is an East Asian language spoken by about 77 million people. It is the official and national language of both Koreas: North Korea and South Korea, with different standardized official forms used in each country. It is a recognised minority language in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean Autonomous County of Jilin province, China. It is also spoken in parts of Sakhalin, Russia, and Central Asia.

Historical and modern linguists classify Korean as a language isolate. however, it does have a few extinct relatives, which together with Korean itself and the Jeju language (spoken in the Jeju Province and considered somewhat distinct) form the Koreanic language family. The linguistic homeland of Korean is suggested to be somewhere in Manchuria.

Modern Korean descends from Middle Korean, which in turn descends from Old Korean, which descends from the Proto-Koreanic language which is generally suggested to have its linguistic homeland somewhere in Manchuria. Whitman (2012) suggests that the proto-Koreans, already present in northern Korea, expanded into the southern part of the Korean Peninsula at around 300 BC and coexisted with the descendants of the Japonic Mumun cultivators (or assimilated them). Both had influence on each other and a later founder effect diminished the internal variety of both language families.

The Korean alphabet, known as Hangul (Hangeul) in South Korea and Chosŏn'gŭl in North Korea, is a writing system for the Korean language created by King Sejong the Great in 1443. The letters for the five basic consonants reflect the shape of the speech organs used to pronounce them, and they are systematically modified to indicate phonetic features; similarly, the vowel letters are systematically modified for related sounds, making Hangul a featural writing system.

19. disadvantage of korean language in philippines

The way I see it, learning a foreign language or two is never a bad thing. Due to globalization, people who are bilingual or multilingual are opened to a whole set of opportunities that are not readily available or offered to people who can only speak and understand one language.

Learning the Korean language is not a bad thing because more and more Koreans are visiting the country and they have also become more lenient with Filipinos entering Korea. South Korea's economy is also among the world's best and they are now considered a first-world country that does business with other countries. We may have a competitive advantage when it comes to providing manpower and other services to countries like Korea if we can speak their language and English.

But still, why are there Filipinos against the inclusion of the Korean language in the local curriculum? Here are some valid points that I do agree with:

While Filipinos are quick to jump on the Pinoy Pride wagon, our cultural and national identity is not as strong as our neighboring Asian countries. To instill a strong national and cultural identity, a strong emphasis on Filipino and local languages must be strictly taught at the elementary and secondary levels. Local literature and history must not be taught through routine spoonfeeding but through the cultivation of appreciation and relating it to life and current events. Introducing a new language will take time and effort away from this. While it is true that speaking and understanding more than one language is beneficial, more emphasis must be placed on English first. Since English is the world's lingua franca, this would benefit more students if they can express themselves eloquently in English. The introduction of languages other than English can be done later on when students are at a more advanced level such as Senior High School or college.Individual or regional students must be given a choice on which language they should be allowed to learn. This is because some languages may benefit a select group of people than others. Career paths and emerging trends and other factors should be considered when setting a language class for students or when choosing which to learn.
